veganfood |
|
|
Info: The story begins in November of 2001,
when Ingrid decided to do something with the recipes
she'd been shamelessly pilfering from alt.food.vegan --
other than hoard them to herself.
And so the typing began.
After originally sticking the site on tripod (poor
student syndrome), Ingrid received an email from a
certain individual by the name of mincus, offering his
extremely skilled services to host the site himself.
And so, after having the luck to find quite a cheap
domain name, and mincus' marathon, record-breaking
creation of the site's backend, veganfood was reborn.
The last we heard, Ingrid got restless at work one day
and decided to 'avoid work to do work' - designing a new
layout for the site. mincus also thought this might be a
good opportunity to add a few dazzling features like a
comment/membership system, so we have a feeling it may
be looking a bit different soon. |

The Vegetarian Charity |
|
|
Info: The Vegetarian Charity is a registered
charity that exists to help needy vegetarians and vegans
up to, and including, 25 years of age. It also aims to
promote knowledge of vegetarianism among young people up
to, and including, 25 years of age. The Charity awards
grants to suitable projects in most parts of the world.
Financial assistance can be given for educational
courses and the relief of poverty. In general applicants
may apply on their own behalf or, in the case of young
children, a parent or guardian can apply on behalf of
the child.
Grants are available without consideration of ethnic
origin, race or religion. The Charity is UK based but
considers applications from most countries. Grants are
made to individual applicants for the relief of poverty
and to assist with educational courses. Each application
is considered on its merits and it is not possible to
say in advance whether or not it will be successful.
Assistance to students studying courses of higher
education is generally only given for first degrees and
not for postgraduate study. However, all applications
are considered on their individual merits. |

Vegan Organic Network |
|
|
Info: Founded in 1996, the Vegan-Organic
Network, VON, is an ambitious UK registered charity with
an international network of active supporters. Our aims
are to research and promote vegan-organic (also known as
stockfree organic) methods of agriculture and
horticulture throughout the world so that green, clean
and cruelty-free food becomes widely available.
Vegan-organic/stockfree organic broadly means any system
of cultivation that excludes artificial chemicals,
livestock manures, animal remains from slaughterhouses
and indeed anything of animal origin such as fishmeal.
From large farms to window boxes, we show farmers and
home growers how to use vegan-organic methods. Our
supporters include people of many viewpoints, some
involved in growing food, some not, but all united in
recognising the need for a fundamental restructuring of
food production methods and land use and their
importance for human well-being and social justice, for
animal welfare and biodiversity and in the battle for
environmental sustainability.
We publish a magazine “Growing Green International”.
There is also a free advice service for members of the
public, home growers, smallholders and farmers. Through
our Stockfree Organic Services wing, farms can be
certified as Stockfree Organic; our Stockfree Organic
Standards are inspected by the Soil Association in the
UK and QCS in North America. We organise farm walks,
allotment and garden visits and volunteer placements on
stockfree organic holdings, publish guides for farmers
and home growers, support higher education in our
methods and as they say, much more. |

Vegetarian Society |
|
|
Info: The Vegetarian Society of the United
Kingdom is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the
world. It is an educational charity promoting
understanding and respect for vegetarian lifestyles.
We set standards for what is truly vegetarian, then
challenge perceptions with National Vegetarian Week.
We reward integrity within the vegetarian marketplace
with the Annual Vegetarian Society Awards.
Going vegetarian is an easy way for people to lower
their own environmental impact and help ensure worldwide
food security - we explain why.
We offer expert advice on nutritional issues and provide
free information to individuals, companies and
organisations.
We keep vegetarianism in the news and feed the real
facts to the press.
We campaign to raise the profile of vegetarian issues
and help people understand the reasons for choosing a
vegetarian way of life.
We give talks and presentations to schools, colleges and
community groups.
We distribute teacher and student packs to ensure that
vegetarianism is well represented in the Food Technology
curriculum.
We teach members of the public and professional chefs
how to cook imaginative, creative and delicious
vegetarian food.
We work behind the scenes with the food industry to
improve provision; persuading food manufacturers and
retailers to use free range eggs, to take the gelatine
out of their yoghurts or to cook their veggie burgers
separately from their meat.
We give vegetarians and vegans from all walks of life a
louder, stronger, better-informed voice. |

Viva! |
|
|
Info: Eating meat, fish and dairy causes
environmental destruction, damages human health,
contributes to global hunger and inflicts immense
suffering on billions of animals across the world. Viva!
believes that the solution to all these problems is in
our own hands: the best way to stop the destruction and
the cruelty is to stop eating animals now – go
vegetarian, or better still, vegan. Through popular
campaigns, solid research, undercover exposés and
effective media skills they have brought the reality of
modern farming into people's living rooms. They have
enlightened millions, shocked most and changed the diets
of many. You can help with these successes. |
