British Ecological Society |
|
|
Info: The vision of the British Ecological
Society is to advance ecology and make it count.
Ecology is the scientific study of the distribution,
abundance and dynamics of organisms, their interactions
with other organisms and with their physical
environment. At a time when finite natural resources are
being used at increasing rates, it has never been more
important for human society to understand its impact on
ecological systems and their importance in maintaining
human health.
The BES’s many activities include the publication of a
range of scientific literature, including four
internationally renowned journals, the organisation and
sponsorship of a wide variety of meetings, the funding
of numerous grant schemes, education work and policy
work. The Society also runs supporting initiatives such
as the gratis book scheme which aims to make ecology
publications available to those who couldn't otherwise
obtain them.
The Society was established in 1913 and has
approximately 4,000 members worldwide, and membership is
open to all with an interest in ecology. There is a
small membership fee, with discounts for students and
those from low income countries.
The Society is funded through income from subscriptions,
publications and its investment portfolio. It is an
independent organisation that receives little outside
funding. |

the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK in accordance
with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. The
Foundation was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian

Movement, later joined by the National Federation of
Women’s Institutes. Member organisations now also

Organisations International (FLO), which unites 21
labelling initiatives across Europe, Japan, North
America, Mexico and Australia/New Zealand as well as
networks of producer organisations from Asia, Africa,
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our vision is of a world in which justice and
sustainable development are at the heart of trade
structures and practices so that everyone, through their
work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood and
develop their full potential.
To achieve this vision, Fairtrade seeks to transform
trading structures and practices in favour of the poor
and disadvantaged. By facilitating trading partnerships
based on equity and transparency, Fairtrade contributes
to sustainable development for marginalised producers,
workers and their communities. Through demonstration of
alternatives to conventional trade and other forms of
advocacy, the Fairtrade movement empowers citizens to
campaign for an international trade system based on
justice and fairness. |
