Ascension - the new Adili

Info:  We thought, "if only there was a department store where every collection on offer had the highest possible eco credentials. Where fairly made, organic and recycled products sat side by side, beautifully crafted and desirably chic".

So, we set out to create just this and have filled it with over 80 of the best sustainable and fair brands from around the world. Adili's philosophy is both idealistic and simple: to bring you lovely, lifestyle things made beautifully, made fairly, and wherever possible, made from organic materials. We're working towards eco-perfection all the time – sometimes we reach it, sometimes we know there's a way to go. But we do everything in our power to get it right, closely monitoring supply chains, supporting suppliers, measuring and validating ethical credentials.

Aztec Arts

Info:  At Aztec Arts we believe firmly in the principles of fair trade. We ensure all the people who make our products receive a fair price for their crafts, reflecting the quality and intricacy of their work. As all our products are hand made, each one makes a unique unusual gift, ideal for wedding and Christmas gifts.

Bindi Bazar

Info:  Sells wonderful fair trade bags, which are made by the urban poor in India. The people in India who make these ethnic bags use the plastics others throw away. It's a wonderful idea: it supports recycling in India, provides extra income for the poor people who already collect the plastics and well, as you can see, these ethical bags look very good. We are delighted to bring these fair trade eco bags, jute bags, handbags, totes, jewellery and accessories to the UK.

To the best of their knowledge, each one of their suppliers adopts a fair-trade attitude which comprises of working under suitable and safe working conditions, being paid at least the minimum wage and never negotiating on price. In order to maintain this, BoBelle have very close relationships with their suppliers; all of whom adopt this same positive attitude.

Cape Gem

Info:  Handmade, handpicked, street stopping ethical Mielie handbags and jewellery from Cape Town's hottest designers.

Jewellery designs from Flick, O so Pretty, Joybelle and bonkers, but brilliant charm bracelets from Nikki at Precious Creations.

We stock an extensive range of Mielie bags ranging from large overnight bags, satchels and underarms to small clutches and purses in an array or colours and designs. Mielie's bags are made from recycled materials, using a deliberately time consuming process known as hook weaving, which means that as many jobs as possible are created for the weavers in the Townships, and ensures a high quality finish. Mielie are a not for profit business, which sells its fashion and homeware goods exclusively online, through Cape Gem in the UK. Because Mielie is a social enterprise, any profits are always re-invested into the business or into charitable, causes like the Khayelitsha, the organic vegetable garden, or fire extinguishers for the townships.

Chandni Chowk

Info:  Specialises in textiles, hand made in India and Bangladesh by wonderfully skilled crafts people to a very high quality. We are a fair trade company producing two main fashion collections annually (spring / summer and autumn / winter) along with several satellite collections, usually with something extra special about them such as our Tussah silk collection or organic cotton range. We also have a constantly updated Interiors collection which follows no set seasons, it simply grows and changes as and when inspiration dictates. To compliment both of these departments, we have a range of accessories and jewellery.

Environmental, fair trade and ethical issues are as fundamentally important to Chandni Chowk today, as they were when the company first started up in 1978. We are members of BAFTS (The British Association for Fair Trade Shops), both as importers of fairly traded goods and as retailers of fairly traded goods.

Our aim is simply to try minimise our impact on the environment. We only use natural fibres and are working hard to develop our organic cotton collections — we would love all our products to be organic, but have had great difficulty in sourcing genuine and certifiable organic fibres. We believe that our principal suppliers of textiles from India are representative of the very best of contemporary practice, combining sound commercial judgement with an uncompromising belief in fair and sustainable economic partnerships, and a continuing programme of development of more environmentally 'kinder' projects.
