Turtle Bags |
|
|
Info: Many of our plastic bags travel along
rivers and streams and end up out at sea. Leatherback
Turtles coming to UK waters for jelly fish are
increasingly mistaking our plastic bags for jellyfish.
Plastic bags are becoming a major marine problem for the
same reason that they have been a commercial success --
they don’t break down. Every year, an estimated 17˝
billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets.
This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in
the UK. We produce and use 20 times more plastic today
than we did 50 years ago.
Plastic Bags are a hazard. Turtle Bags are a gentler
alternative. |

uneeka |

|
Info: Was first established in 2005, set up by
two close friends Jodi Skelton and John Tornabene. Both
with a passion for ethical retail and a desire to sell
fairly traded products, the Uneeka concept was created
to show consumers that fairly traded products can be
accessible, affordable and desirable. Uneeka endeavours
to base its operations on the core principle of fair
trade and strong ethical foundations. Fair Trade is a
trading partnership on a global scale, which ensures
that a guaranteed price is paid for produce or goods
from developing countries and encourages long-term
relationships and trading commitments.
We pride ourselves on
sourcing the most innovative and interesting products
from recognised and affiliated fair trade organisations
from all over the world. Accredited with BAFTS (British
Association of Fairtrade Shops), we work to improve the
livelihoods and well being of producers by improving
market access, strengthening producer organisations and
paying a better price for our products. We also actively
work to raise awareness among our customers of the
negative effects on producers of international trade so
that they exercise their purchasing power positively. |

Vandanamu Fair
Trade |
|
|
Info: Based in the UK, it has the following
aims: to alleviate poverty in marginalised communities
in the Pondicherry area, by helping their people to
develop sustainable livelihoods -- this involves
provision of training, facilities to enable people to
apply and develop their skills, and crucially, the
establishment of indigenous and export markets for them
to supply; to inform consumers in more affluent
societies about the realities of life of financially
under-privileged people in South India and to provide
the opportunities that so many of us desire, to
participate in the alleviation of their hardship, to
appreciate their craftsmanship and share in the joys of
working together for the common good; to promote fair
trade generally, and demonstrate that it is possible to
run commercially viable small businesses on fair trade
principles.
The bags, made of a
good-quality unbleached cotton in its natural colour,
can be printed on one or both sides, with your own
designs. The wooden products are made by the
Thambidhurai family. All their handicrafts are made of
Acacia Mangium, a cultivated relatively fast-growing
broad-leaved tree with close-grained wood, common in
Monsoon Asia. The "dots" in the spoons are made of rose
wood, and the spoons have been rubbed with olive oil. No
petroleum products or other toxic substances have been
used. These are sustainable, fair trade products. |
