BAMA |
|
|
Info: The British Aerosol Manufacturers'
Association (BAMA) represents the aerosol supply chain,
from suppliers of components and ingredients to fillers
and marketers. The UK aerosol industry is an important
one, in fact the UK aerosol sector is the second largest
in the world, in terms of the number of aerosols filled.
75% of local authorities
in the UK recycle empty aerosols through their can banks
or kerbside collection schemes, and this number is
increasing week on week. Each year, the UK uses around
600 million aerosols. On average that's 10 cans per
person or 27 cans per household. Aerosols account for 4%
of the metals packaging stream. They estimate that there
are about 25,000 tonnes of tinplated steel and 4,500
tonnes of high grade aluminium available from recycling
aerosol in the UK.
Markets exist for the
materials recovered: detinning recovers tin and high
grade steel; steel scrap is essential in new steel
production; aluminium aerosols are made from 99.7% pure
aluminium with a high resale value. |

CARS |
|
|
Info: Chippenham Aluminium Can & Foil
Recycling Service (CARS) is a social enterprise scheme
for people with learning disabilities based in North
Wiltshire.
In 2003 the team was
approached by Hills Waste, who offered the opportunity
of recycling all the aluminium foil collected in the new
kerb side collection boxes across North Wiltshire. The
Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro)
provided help in the form of a compacting machine,
protective clothing and expert advice; this resulted in
a rapid expansion of the project.
By 2006, foil recycling
had increased to between three to four days each week
with around 25 people spending some of their time
working on the project. Last year, twelve tons of foil
was processed and sold by the Centre, providing raw
material for new car engine cylinder heads. |
