Wildlife Aid |
|
|
Info: Is one of the UK’s largest wildlife
rescue, rehabilitation and release centres. The charity,
having been founded in 1980 by Simon Cowell MBE, is now
the only remaining organisation of its kind in Surrey.
Dealing with in excess of 20,000 wildlife incidents each
year, the centre is open to receive wildlife casualties
around the clock, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Wildlife Aid (apart
from its annual Open Day) is NOT open to the
public. This is due to the fact that all of the
creatures in the hospital’s care are not only sick or
injured, but WILD animals. For our patients to have the
best possible chance at a successful release back into
the wild, the rescue must ensure that they do not become
stressed or imprinted in any way, thus human contact
must be kept to an absolute minimum. |

World Animal Day - October 4th |
|
|
Info: Was started in 1931 at a convention of
ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the
plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to
encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely
celebrated in countries throughout the world. October 4
was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of
St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
It is intended as a day
of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about
animals. It is not restricted to any one nationality,
creed, religion, political belief or ideology. Launched
in the UK on 4 October 2003, organisations, groups,
animal shelters, places of worship, schools, clubs and
individuals who participated in what was to become an
annual event, quite simply, helped make history. |

WSPA |
|
|
Info: Its vision is of a world where animal
welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends. World Society
for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has been promoting
animal welfare for more than 25 years. Their work is
concentrated in regions of the world where few, if any,
measures exist to protect animals.
WSPA’s work is focused on
four priority animal welfare areas: companion animals –
responsible pet ownership, humane stray management and
cruelty prevention; commercial exploitation of wildlife
– intensive farming and the cruel management and killing
of wild animals for food or by-products; farm animals –
intensive farming, long distance transport and slaughter
of animals for food; disaster management – providing
care to animals suffering as a result of man-made or
natural disasters, and thereby protecting people’s
livelihoods. |
