Kon-Tiki

Info:  We are a small family business who import art and crafts from Central and South America. Almost everything we sell is purchased directly from the artists and crafts people who make them, which allows us to support the work and livelihoods of individual families. Many of these families have become firm friends over the years. We operate a fair trade policy with everyone we deal with and always pay a fair price for the things we buy.

Our web site only features some of the fabulous Latin American arts and crafts you will find in our shop. Do come and see us if you are ever in Dorset, England.

Linda Baker - Textile Artist

Homepage   Deep Links:  Latest Work   About the Artist

Info:  My recent work combines stitch, lace fragments and stones to create ethereal sculptural forms. Inspired by life forms clinging to rocks on the seashore, connections are made with the tenacity and fragility of human existence.

Tension is created between the hard unyielding stone and the soft pliable textile forms. The work explores the contrasts between fragility and strength, and lightness and weight.

The textile pieces are created by trapping silk fibres, lace fragments, yarns and text within a web of invisible monofilament thread and embroidery thread which are machine stitched onto soluble fabric. When this is washed away it reveals what appears to be a fragile web of stitch and fragments but which actually has an inner strength.

Linda Marie Young - Textile Artist

Info:  'Her unique keepsake boxes catch the eye with their rich layers of fabric and paper embellished with hand and machine embroidery and delicate cutwork by hand.' -- Embroidery Magazine

Working from a home studio in Leicester, I design and make luxurious boxes for interior decoration, as indulgent gifts, or the treasure keepsakes and memories. Techniques include hand and machine embroidery, layering, ripping, heat manipulation via soldering iron, tea staining, and cutwork by hand. Every box is drawn freehand to ensure each one is different, I only have a template for the box shape. Materials include satins, organzas, plastics, ribbons, papers such as old book pages, tracing paper and textured recycled paper, and found objects such as buttons. Each box is cut out by hand to ensure each one is unique. Although beautiful, I found laser cutting to be a bit too clinical for the boxes.

Lise Bech - Basketmaker

Info:  Her initial interest and motivation in taking up basketry was her desire to be involved with the whole process of making beautiful and useful organic objects: from the growing and harvest of the raw materials through to design and and final execution of the piece -- each step satisfying her love of and commitment to the natural world. Working exclusively with Scottish willow -- much of it organically grown, tended and harvested (coppiced) by hand -- she weaves traditional as well as contemporary pieces for today's lifestyle with integrity and in a sustainable fashion.

Lorraine Ditchburn - Ceramics

Homepage   Deep Links:  Gallery   Functional   Process   News   About   Contact

Info:  I am a designer / maker working within the field of ceramics, and my work is produced by slip-casting porcelain in plaster moulds. Slip-casting is traditionally associated with industrial production, but I have adapted the process to produce ceramics which have a hand-crafted aesthetic.

My ceramics are based on simple, organic forms combining their simplicity of shape with the fineness and purity of porcelain. The driving force behind my work is the creation of surface texture, and porcelain is magnificently able to display delicate surfaces through its ability to highlight every nuance and detail.
